Certificate demonstrates qualifications to administer COVID-19 vaccines
WASHINGTON, DC -- As more pharmacies deliver COVID-19 vaccines across the US, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), the nation’s leading credentialing organization for pharmacy technicians, launches its new Assessment-Based Certificate in Immunization Administration, and is accepting applications now. The credential demonstrates a Certified Pharmacy Technician’s (CPhT’s) qualification to safely deliver and manage immunizations and related tasks, including preparation, documentation, storage, and disposal.
“Pharmacy technicians are a critical component of the health care workforce that is administering and managing COVID-19 vaccines,” said PTCB Executive Director and CEO William Schimmel. “PTCB’s Immunization Administration Certificate distinguishes the technicians who demonstrate knowledge and skill in vaccine delivery and their commitment to serving patients and communities during this health crisis.”
Candidates must complete a PTCB-Recognized Immunization Administration Education/Training Program to earn eligibility to take the assessment. These programs require live demonstration of successful hands-on technique when administering an intramuscular and subcutaneous injection. In addition to documenting safe immunization delivery to patients, the certificate signifies knowledge and skills in immunization schedules, storage of doses, management of personal protective equipment, and other areas.
ASHP is seeking nominations of candidates for both the John W. Webb Lecture Award and Distinguished Service Award. Deadline for submission is April 1, 2021.
recognizes a pharmacy practitioner or educator who has distinguished themselves through extraordinary dedication to fostering excellence in pharmacy management or administration.
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes a member from each Section and Forum whose volunteer activities have supported the mission of their Section or Forum and helped advance the profession.
This is a historic week as we have seen photos and news stories of vaccines arriving at hospitals and health systems across the country, and providers and patients receiving the very first COVID-19 vaccines.
As you receive, prepare, and administer the vaccine, ASHP would be grateful for the opportunity to help recognize the significant role that you and your team members are playing in what will be one of the largest public health initiatives our country has ever undertaken.
If you have photos or video from these activities and would like to share them with ASHP to tell the story of pharmacy’s role, please send them to email@example.com. Also, please send any links to local news stories featuring pharmacy or if there are any social media posts that you would like us to recognize.
Thank you for your efforts with all you are doing for your colleagues, patients, and public health through COVID-19 vaccinations!
